This course aims to provide participants with a solid grounding in addressing Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Emergencies, including a critical overview of key concepts, theory and relevant legal frameworks, examples of good practices and research, guidelines and tools for building-in GBV prevention, mitigation and response strategies in emergencies. The course is designed to build towards core competencies that have been identified at global level for those working on GBViE.
The course will have a focus on critical reflection and understanding as well as core tools and include topics such as: historical and emerging issues and key debates in the area of gender-based violence globally, and in the context of emergencies; the humanitarian system with a gender lens; the critical importance of ethical and safe approaches to data collection and research; coordination; mainstreaming; prevention; and health, legal and case management response.
The course is expected to be blended, with 2 weeks of on-line and 2 weeks of in-person learning, plus final assignments.
Why: There is growing understanding that GBV response and prevention is lifesaving and all humanitarian actors are responsible and obligated to act to prevent and mitigate GBV. However, even where there is willingness to support work on addressing GBV in emergencies (GBViE), there is frequently a lack of capacity at international and national level. This course is designed towards building the competencies of participants to support humanitarian action to address GBViE
Who is it for: Humanitarian actors and masters level students who want to deepen their capacity, and to develop their skills, confidence, and know-how, to support work in the area of GBViE prevention, mitigation and response. Applicants should have a university degree level qualification, and fluency in English.

When: Applications are now closed for the International Summer School on Addressing Gender-Based Violence in Emergencies taking place in June 2018
Duration: 4 Weeks – First 2 weeks online, the second 2 weeks in person, and the final assignment due in July.
Where: The course will take place online and on the University College Dublin Campus, Dublin, Ireland in the first year. In the future it aims to be promoted and shared by Universities and stakeholders globally.
Qualification Awarded: This will be an intensive blended course, worth 10 ECTS from UCD Centre for Humanitarian Action.
Fees: The course tuition fee is €1,000. This fee covers participation in the course and course materials. It does not cover transportation, room and board or visa costs.
Who is involved:
The ISGBViE is a new initiative by the University College Dublin Centre for Humanitarian Action (UCD CHA) and the Irish Consortium on Gender-Based Violence (IC GBV) , in collaboration with the International Rescue Committee, the Gender-Based Violence Area of Responsibility, Raising Voices, the Network on Humanitarian Action, and the Institute for Anthropology, Gender and African Studies at the University of Nairobi . The development of this project has its origins in the World Humanitarian Summit and it has received funding from Irish Aid.
This project received funding from Irish Aid and is guided by a Programme Board co-chaired by the University College Dublin Centre for Humanitarian Action and the Irish Consortium on Gender-Based Violence, and including representation from the Gender-based Violence Area of Responsibility, Raising Voices, the Institute of Anthropology, Gender and African Studies of the University of Nairobi, the International Rescue Committee and the secretariat of the Network on Humanitarian Action.
The programme is further informed by an Advisory Network of academics, practitioners and policy experts from a range of disciplines, providing advice and contributing expertise, materials and research. It is a collaborative project.
